Local Craft Beer
Vancouver Island has some great local breweries. More of them than we thought until we started ‘hanging out’ on Vancouver Island. We have tried a few in the past and enjoy the selection at Tofino Brewing Company but it has been a while since we tried anything new. We were told about White Sails Brewing located in a converted building in downtown Nanaimo, so of course we had to check it out.
White Sails Brewing
The brewery is built on the site of the old Newcastle Hotel which was built in the late 1800’s by the owner of one of the Pacific Northwest’s largest breweries at the time – Union Brewing. The vision was to create a gathering space where people can relax, meet with friends and enjoy fresh craft beers. The taproom space, located at 125 Comox Street is open and light with a small patio off the side. The high beam roof and open brewing area make the space feel very large. Add in the fact that they serve popcorn we were hooked! (Well, one of us for sure.)
White Sails currently has 5 flagship beers and a few specialty or seasonal craft brews. We tried tasters of: Departure Bay Session Ale, Old City Smash Ale, Butter Tubs Tafelbier, Yellow Point Pale Ale and a pint of Mount Benson IPA. Our favs were the Session Ale (Tara) and the IPA (Jeff).
The Session Ale was light (4.6% abv) with a bit of citrus and hops, but smooth. The IPA was medium bodied, also with a bit of citrus and hoppy (7% abv). The Smash was also very good but the Tafelbier had too much coffee flavor for us non-coffee drinkers.
Some small snacks (popcorn, pretzels, pepperoni, salsa and chips) are available but you’re also welcome to bring your own food in, or order delivery right to your table from local restaurants. It was not busy when we were there as it was before 6pm but it looks like a place that would be full and fun in the evenings!
