One Day Vacation
We needed to take a break from the day to day management of a golf course but did not know what to do. The ‘Parks’ (Banff, Jasper, Lake Louise) are packed at this time of year and camping is not in our wheel-house anyway. The NFL has not started yet and you can only shop so much (even at the gigantic Edmonton Mall). A friend, and former Edmontonian, suggested Mayfair Dinner Theatre (Thanks Tracy!).
With a few internet clicks we found out that the theatre is inside the DoubleTree by Hilton in West Edmonton and offers overnight packages that include dinner and show tickets plus breakfast the next morning. We were in! It was however, a bit convoluted to book. We had to call the box office to book but then received two different confirmations (box office and hotel) and paid in two separate transactions. They could streamline this process some but we did get a better price doing it this way than if we had booked the dinner theatre tickets and the hotel room separately.
Dinner and a Show
We had not been to a dinner theatre for many years and had pretty low expectations for the food and beverage and the service going in. We were very surprised! The buffet selection was great with a large salad bar, a fairly decent seafood station, pasta, lots of hot sides, beef, pork, chicken and fish mains, a roast beef carver and a nice cheese and fruit selection plus a wide range of desserts. The wine list included a good selection of bottles and wines by the glass and there was a full cocktail menu (with after dinner options). Our server was on top of things during dinner and checked on us at intermission. The show we saw was called ‘All Shook Up’. The music was mostly Elvis with a few others thrown in to make the story flow. The story was a bit of Footloose (‘no dancing in this town’ idea) mixed with a Grease theme (think motorcycles and blue suede shoes). It was entertaining.
DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel West Edmonton
The hotel has a nice lobby and good bar (both keys to our perfect stay). We booked a junior suite but with such a good lobby bar we did not use the sitting area anyway so would just book a regular room next time. The WIFI was fast and the warm chocolate chip cookies at check-in were a nice welcome. The hotel is only a 8 – 10 minute drive to West Edmonton Mall. Breakfast was included in our package and we were surprised to find a full breakfast buffet with as many offerings as a typical full-priced Sunday Brunch. All in all, we would stay at this hotel again, even if we were not going to the theatre.
We were away from the golf course for 24 hours but it felt like a vacation. All the things we need for a getaway – a nice room, a proper bar (with a good cocktail list) and good food were all covered. The show was a nice activity for the evening. We recommend The Mayfield Dinner Theatre and The DoubleTree Hilton West Edmonton to anyone.
