Babich Wine Tasting
A few weeks ago we attended a unique Winemakers dinner at University Golf Club. The event was a stand up food station tasting style dining with six courses; each course served with a unique wine pairing from Babich Wines of New Zealand. A great part of the event was having the current proprietor and third generation winemaker, David Babich, on site for the event.
From the late 1940s the family increasingly focused on winemaking. The sons also became involved in the business, with eldest son Peter joining in 1949, and Joe Jr. joining the company in 1958 and taking over winemaking responsibilities in 1962. David Babich would join the family business much later!
Hawke’s Bay Syrah Reserve
Although the wine is recommended to be opened after a few years in the wine cellar, we choose to enjoy one of the four 2007 vintages we purchased. It was fantastic, perfectly cooled after 60 minutes in the fridge with a very smooth finish. With a hit of pepper and large fruit flavours this wine was a perfect compliment to our Rib Eye and stuffed pepper dinner (guess who had what). In any event we both loved the wine for its aroma, flavour and finish… looking forward already to the remaining three bottles in our wine cabinet.
