Nook on Denman
Nook is truly a nook – located in a small space on Denman Street, the restaurant seats about 12 at the bar and another 20 or so at tables. I had been once before with a friend and knew that it would be busy so we decided to go for 6pm, much earlier than we normally would. This plan turned out to be a good one. We had to wait about 10 minutes but the line-up got much longer behind us. We could have waited longer for a table but opted instead to sit at the bar, which was a good choice. The bartender is also the meat slicer and in charge of putting together the Antipasto platters.
Specializing in house-made pasta and pizza the menu is small but has lots of great options including antipasto and crostini appetizer platters. There is also a daily appy, pasta and pizza feature. The wine menu is strictly Italian except for the only rose being Joie from BC. There are 8 to 10 whites and 15 or so reds to choose from (more than half are available by the glass) and there are also three bottled wine features daily. We chose one of the daily wine features – 2007 Re Manfredi Aglianico del Vulture from Basilicata, Italy. We know nothing about Italian wine. It was spicy with a kick and went well with the pasta and the pizza we ordered.
The pizza oven is visible through the open kitchen and the smell was amazing – I had to try one ! I chose the pizza of the day with caramelized onions, roasted garlic, arugula and proscuitto and Jeff chose the Spaghetti Bolognese. Both were delicious! The pasta sauce was very flavourful as was the pizza sauce and both the pasta and the pizza crust were cooked perfectly. Just as you would suspect in an Italian restaurant. After watching the bartender create the Antipasto platters we will have to go back for a ‘sharing’ night so we can try one or two items. The Gnocchi with Baby Meatballs also caught our eye. The service from the bartender was great and we would likely sit at the bar again to watch his food and drink creations. Another great meal!
