NGCOA Golf Business Canada Conference
We try to attend the NGCOA Canada Conference every year and have never been disappointed. The keynote speaker is always motivational and every session provides some great take-aways. There is also ample time for networking which is a great way to get to know other professionals in our industry. This year’s conference starts on Thursday in Victoria and is looking to be one of the best we have attended. Here are a few of the sessions that we are looking forward to (in addition to Jeff’s panel discussion):
Former Navy Commander, Michael Abrashoff will recount the leadership lessons he learned when he took over command, at the age of 36, of the ship with the lowest staff morale and highest turnover in the Pacific Fleet. There are sure to be some extreme lessons here that can be scaled down to help a variety of golf operations.
It’s OK to be politically incorrect to stand out
We love the title on this one “What’s Your Unique Business Value Proposition? It’s OK to be politically incorrect to stand out” and also the speaker. Eric Thorsteinson is a long-time good friend who is also a great and passionate marketer and who is sometimes politically incorrect, which will make you like him even more. In 2007 he was awarded the PGA of Canada Merchandiser of the Year and since taking over as General Manager of Black Mountain Golf Club has given the club a unique position in the market that is enviable.
Yield Management: It’s not a dirty word and YES, it does apply to you!
This is a topic I’m sure a lot of people are looking forward to, especially in light of all the third party reseller discussions that have been going on lately. Don Holmstrom of Value Drivers Inc., another good friend, is leading this session and with his accounting and financial background will surely have some great insights on the topic.
We will be attending these sessions and many others and will be blogging about as many lessons learned as we can. Check back during the conference (Thursday to Saturday, November 21st to 23rd) for posts. We are also happy to be staying at the host hotel – The Fairmont Empress in Victoria (we always love a Fairmont experience) and to be attending all of the social events including the opening reception at the BC Royal Museum which we both love visiting.
