Wine Tasting at Home – Burrowing Owl
Burrowing Owl Winery
Burrowing Owl wines are among our favourites and we’ve posted blogs previously about our Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc tastings. We have also been to the winery a couple of times (read here) but for whatever reason had not tasted the Burrowing Owl Merlot. The winery and vineyard lie within one of Canada’s most unique ecosystems which includes the northern most tip of the Sonora Desert. The location is on a sandy plateau near the north end of Osoyoos Lake in the heart of wine country.
Burrowing Owl Merlot
On this day we tasted the 2006 Burrowing Owl Merlot, one of the wines we purchased a couple of years ago but had not opened until last week. Bottled in 2008 the Merlot is deep burgundy in colour and has a dark meaty aroma. The taste is very smooth with flavours of plum and blackberry. Definitely a red meat wine but also very smooth and easy to drink. We really enjoyed the wine, but at $30 a bottle it is not an everyday wine… save it for a somewhat special occasion.
